For the Love of Leggings

Though trends may change from season to season, there’s no doubt that leggings are ever-present. Reinventing themselves in new forms each season, leggings are a wardrobe staple and a runway regular. Bored of the basics? Get ready to step it up a notch this winter. Florals, sparkly, knitted, colored, liquid-different variations of leggings and tights are fresh and fashionable this season. The wonderful bouquet of leggings and tights is vast. You can wear your favorite sundress without freezing your legs off; your too-short bubble mini is now much more school appropriate, and your overall outfit looks polished and chic.

From Mary-Kate to Miley, celebrities are in love with the leather-like liquid legging. Some shiny, some matte, these leggings are fresh off the runway and totally rockstar-chic. This look from Topshop Unique is simple but still stylish. The monochromatic pieces make the ensemble fresh and classy, and the peter-pan collar detail on the sheath adds a sweet detail to the edgy leggings.

Patterned tights are very elegant. Worn with something as simple as shift dress or as fancy as a cocktail frock, a patterned pair will automatically pull the look together. This ribbed gray sweater dress from Chanel is cute on it’s own, but when paired with zigzagged, floral indented tights, the cute matching hat and dress duo goes from youthful and fun to stylish and presentable.

A look like this is certainly not for the faint of heart! If you are craving some punch in your fashions, then this look is perfect for you. These tights with thick, block-like stripes are the focal point of the outfit. Just don’t overwhelm your outfit by wearing a colorful top with tights of legging with a bright print. As seen at Sonia Rykiel, this plain black dress is subdued enough to compliment the loud bottom half, but still stylish on its own.

Whatever your take on them is, it’s clear that the comfy, stretchy leg wear is here to stay.

Recession Proof Your Wardrobe

Every fashionista is scrambling to make sure that all of her fashion dreams come true. It’s easy to have closet envy with so many fashionable finds all around us, but it appears that the economy has other plans. Now, it’s important to embrace the situation and decide where to splurge and where to save. Staffers at Fashion Fantasy Game are recommending that savvy gals-about-town jump right into this bohemian chic movement. This style works, because it stresses the importance of mixing high-end pieces with cost conscience fashion.

1. Party Shoes

Every gal needs a fabulous pair of shoes, and if you are anything like us, then you are busy wearing out the soles of your shoes and trotting all over town. We are suggesting that you save a few dollars with these must-have heels from Sigerson Morrison for Target. At just $36.99, this foot candy is a real steal, and the silver color is just perfect for holiday parties. Bonus: the non skid tread on the toe and heel is a great function. But, let’s be honest, you aren’t buying this for the practicality of the shoe. This is the best way to inexpensively try out the metallic trend without making a major financial commitment.

2. Audrey Hepburn-Inspired Dressing

We adore this frock courtesy of ABS by Allen Schwartz. Now, this is more of an investment piece, but it is positively timeless. The classic lines of this dress are effortlessly chic and will stand the test of time. We are advising to spend a little more on this type of construction, because it will never go out of style. The high waisted belt, color blocking, and bell sleeves are modern updates to the traditional shape. But, they are not so distinctive that they will ever date this dress.

3. Ramp Up in Ruffles!

We already told you about the party shoes, and now we think you should have a swanky set of ruffles. This dress from the Gap is simply stunning. It is flirty and stylish. Translation: it is everything you want in a holiday ensemble. Here’s the best part, at a mere $78, it definitely won’t break the bank.

4. Irresistible Tote

Did you ever think you could achieve style for less than $6? We were skeptical too, but we think this tote from Forever 21 is beyond adorable. For just $5.50, you can update your around-town messenger bag with the European influences of Paris.  This bag is all cotton, and it really makes a statement.

Luxe Layers

While some may see donning layers upon layers as a sloppy, bulky and unflattering style, the looks soaring down the runways are proving just the opposite. When balanced with feminine details, the layered look offers an edgy but chic pulled together look that’s comfortable.

Burberry Prorsum Fall 2008 Ready-to-WearBurberry Prorsum Pre-Fall 2008

Burberry Prorsum showed the trend in its Fall 2008 show, and epitomized how the layered look should be worn. With long, belted cardigans, flouncy skirts, and wide-legged pants in cranberry-purples, dark blues, grays all paired with opaque black tights, it was the accessories-long scarves, slouchy beanies, and belts-which made the look key. The line also predicts layers to be a hit as shown in the outfits that swarmed down the runway for its spring 2009 show. Though the ensembles had a similar quality to it’s Fall counterparts, the colors for Spring were lighter and perkier. Periwinkle blues, whites, grays, and greens dominated the clothes. And instead of black tights, thick and slouchy gray socks were paired with platforms. While floppy hats and glittery details accessorized, it was the chunky necklaces that freshened up the fun trend.

If you are still unsure about looking more scruffy than chic, start out small. Pair a longer skirt or dress under your favorite shorter (depending on your dress’ hemline) coat or sweater. Add a pair of leggings or thick, knit tights and boots, and you’ll be right on cue for the upcoming seasons. For a grungy glam appeal, add a knit hat or fingerless gloves to your layered ensemble, or for a more refined, sophisticated look, wear a ribboned headband and lots of jewelry.

The layered look is simple to recreate and no matter how you spin it, super stylish!

Dress like a Hills Girl

Much fodder has been made about Audrina Patridge’s obvious absence from Lauren Conrad’s recent runway show during L.A. Fashion Week. Perhaps everyone is still focused on Audrina’s eviction (oops, we mean voluntary move out… all in the name of love for Justin Bobby). Spoiler alert, we knew this was happening a few months ago, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to ruin a good episode of The Hills. We confess that we are more than a little obsessed with these frenemies that are as stylish as they are vicious. There’s just something about all of that gal-pal drama that leaves us wanting more every week.

The collection reflected L.C.’s signature California girl style which is brimming with mini and maxi dresses, jersey knits, and casual comfort. The hair was kept unfussy with loose waves, braids, and head pieces. Flowers, headbands, and crystals gave a nod to FIFTIES glamour crossed with a modern sensibility.

Our spies tell us that this was possibly the hottest ticket of the week. Apparently, fashionistas, reality tv stars, and publicity-seeking gals about town were literally lined up for the show by the side of a dumpster. We hear that the check-in process was more than a little tricky. Hmmmm… well, we aren’t quite sure about what to make of all of the commotion. But, we sure can take a few cues from Lauren’s show…

1. STICK TO A BASIC COLOR PALETTE

Don’t go too crazy with vibrant hues. Muted tones offer versatility and functionality.

2. EMBRACE GLAMOUR

Even with casual ensembles, never be afraid to punch up your look with a little incandescence.

3. FLOAT AWAY

Make sure your laid-back chic look is well proportioned with pleats and balloon-inspired skirting.

Give Thanks in Style

Suddenly, we’ve found ourselves in November. And to most Americans, the second to last month of the year signals only one thing- Thanksgiving! And while the pilgrims and the Indians came together in celebrating the very first Thanksgiving nearly four-hundred years ago, the message it gives us, to give thanks to the friends and family we have in our lives, stills rings true. And with a newly elected president, a looming New Year and the winter holidays around the corner, there is no better time to give thanks in style!

So dig into these historical trends and pay homage to the very first Thanksgiving guests.

It’s not secret that American Indians and their culture have influenced our world, and fashion is no exception. Moccasins and mukluks are popular footwear from the preps to the boho-chic sets, and leather satchels, turquoise jewelry, and big beads are also classic trends. However, this season, we’ve seen that feathers, not unlike the beautifully colored ones seen on Native American headdresses- are very in. Dangling from earrings, on headbands or necklaces, these airy accessories are a tried and true addition to any outfit. Here, the always-stylish Mary-Kate Olsen dons a feathered headband.

When the pilgrims crossed the pond in the Mayflower from their native England to settle in the new land, their fashions were variably indifferent from their dinner companions.

While one may think of English fashion as mod-sixties or plaid prep, in the sixteen hundreds, clothes were mostly about conventionality. The look was all about long skirts, shawls, scarves, and warm layers, which surely served them well during the chilly New England autumn. In a very updated way, Lanvin’s maxi skirt and blouse ensemble could certainly go in the wardrobe of a very modern pilgrim!Lanvin Resort 2009

Whatever you choose to wear for your holiday dinner remember to give thanks to those who paved the way.

Halloween Inspired Fashion

We are always talking about how to successfully take trends from runway to reality. In light of Halloween, we’ve decided to mix things up a bit. Now, we want to integrate elements from our favorite night of mischief into our daily wardrobe. Here are our pics from the Mercedes-Benz runway shows in Los Angeles.

ANIMAL PRINTS

Take a page from the many costumes decked out in animal prints. It worked for designer Leila Hafzi who recently rocked the runway with subversive prints, silhouettes, and cut-outs. Hafzi proved that when styled properly, this trend is rocker-chic and super cool.

PRETTY IN PINK

We just adore all of the Halloween ensembles that are decked out in forget-me-not-pink. Sometimes it’s the best thing in the world to be super girly and dress up in the most adorable outfits! Designer Lana Fuchs clearly felt the same way at her Los Angeles runway show that featured this flirty little number that innocently commands attention with ruffles, flowers, and full-on pink.

PROVOCATIVE RED

Designer Christian Audigier took a page from Little Red Riding Hood when creating his 2009 collection. His models always push the limits in costume-inspired fashions, and this season was no different. His version of Gossip Girl fashion reminds us of one of our most beloved fairy tales. Our thoughts? Fabulous!

SCARECROW CHIC

In your wildest dreams, did you ever think that the word scarecrow would be paired with chic? Well, we didn’t think so either, but the Ed Hardy show has us snging a different tune.

CAMPING IN STYLE

Eco-Ganik is surely doing their part to save the planet by using naturally grown and organic fabrics. We applaud the greening of our planet, and we think our eco-chic camper gal feels the same way.

Be a Jean-ious!

Because they go with nearly everything, are easy to toss on, and are comfortable for an on-the-go person, jeans can virtually become a uniform for many. But to keep your daily look from seeming dreary, it’s crucial to add a fashionable touch to your jeans. Here are the newest looks to keep you from looking drab in denim.

Loose Fits:

This season, the baggy, relaxed, grunge-esque, fit is the hottest style in denim jeans. Seen on many celebrities, the loose-legged look (also referred to as the “boyfriend” jean) is very comfy and freeing-especially for those jam-packed days. However, this look can easily go from chic to sloppy. Balance out the wideness with a slimmer top so you don’t overwhelm your frame. To avoid looking like a 1980’s disaster, pair your loose bottoms with feminine pieces like a ruffled blouse, a ribbon headband and pretty shoes like colorful flats like this look from Chanel.

Cropped Skinnies:

In the past few years, skinny jeans have been seen on everyone a-list to the kids in class. And while the look may seem like a tired trend, however, when cropped at ankle-length, the shorter hem gives the trendy style a retro quality. When paired with adorable flats, the look is fashion-forward but classy. The matching booties and belt in this Nina Ricci ensemble adds a youthful, very up to date edge to the floral top and tapered pants. Make sure to balance off the jeans’ slimness by with a loose top, like a tunic, tee shirt or a long cardigan.

High-Waisted:

Waistlines are on the rise! Many designers have shown the very 1970’s trend, in both wide leg and tapered varieties, and paired with plaid tops and sailor-style button details. D&G showed a pair of retro cut jeans with a flowy, hippie blouse which has an especially vintage vibe. However, these drawstring, paper-bag waisted pants from Jenny Kayne gives a more modern twist on the look. Don’t dismiss the high-waisted trend for fear of the “mom jeans,” look. High-waisted jeans are flattering on all sizes when paired with the right pieces and accessories. Trouser-like jeans can be dressed up or down. Worn with heels, the style will lengthen your legs, but boots and flats work too depending on the occasion.

Trick or Treat Like a TV Star!

From Blockbuster heroines to political figures and the typical witches and ghosts, finding a creative, affordable, and fun Halloween costume can be challenging. But inspiration for a fabulous costume can be as close as your television screen.

Betty Suarez from Ugly Betty

Ugly-Betty-tv-105.jpg

Okay, so maybe Betty looks like she’s wearing a costume all of the time, but her mismatched chic look will be easy to replicate for Halloween. Despite the fact that she works for a fashion magazine, Betty’s style is more thrift shop than couture. And you don’t need to look farther than your own closet. Start with a printed skirt. It can be floral or polka dot or striped. Pair the skirt with a blouse that totally doesn’t match. How about a green floral skirt with a purple and red striped top? Totally Betty. Top with an oversized vest. Betty loves her accessories, too. She often wears a “B” initial necklace, and course, dons a pair of thick-rimmed glasses. If you really want to get into the Betty spirit, there are only two words: Guadalajara Poncho.

Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl

Gossip-Girl-tv-30.jpg

Blair is the ultimate prep school Upper East Side princess.  Adorning her ensembles with details of bows, lace, ruffles and all things girly, Blair manages to look sleek and youthful at the same time. Dressing up like Blair is fairly simple. Start with a pleated skirt and a polo shirt or starchy button down. Though she may wear a uniform to school, it’s her accessories that make her stand out. Pile on some Blair Waldorf-esque accessories. Perhaps knot a colorful handkerchief around your neck or wear a few dainty bangles-personalize the look. To get the full Blair effect, however, a headband is key. Blair is seldom seen without one in her perfectly coiffed brunette locks. Try an oversized bow or a silk flower adorned band. Next, add pair of tights, lace stockings or frilly knee socks. Slip on a trendy pair of Mary Jane flats or a pair of oxfords for a comfortable but still chic look. Instant Blair Waldorf style.

 Hannah Montana from Hannah Montana

Hannah-Montana-ds104.jpg

Though international pop star Hannah Montana is Miley Stewart’s alter ego, her celebrity style is glittery, girly, and all around eye catching! A long blonde wig is key in achieving the Hannah look. Because she jumps around dancing and singing on the stage, she often wears jeans-something that you mostly likely have in your wardrobe (bonus points if they are bedazzled!). Wear the most sparkly, colorful, bright and glittery shirt you can find. Hannah is all about the glitz and glamour. Finally, tote around a rhinestoned microphone. Don’t have one handy? It’s totally easy to make. Wrap the bristle part of a hairbrush with tinfoil until it starts to resemble a microphone. Paint the handle part with a metallic or glittery black paint and people will be asking for your autograph before you can say “sweet niblets!”

Maddie Fitzpatrick from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody

Zach-Cody-tv-15.jpg

As the posh Tipton Hotel’s candy counter girl, Maddie is a high school student who dresses like a typical teen (unlike her glam, wealthy and sometimes ditsy best friend London) so achieving the authentic Maddie style is easy to replicate. To dress like Maddie, wear a miniskirt with a blue collared shirt, just like the Tipton Hotel uniform. Maddie dazzles up her required ensemble with her dad’s neckties, knee socks, and fun shoes like furry boots. Maddie is outspoken and makes it known that she is a huge supporter of the environment. She is a tree hugger who cares about animals and global warming. Maddie is a devout recycler, so on Halloween, tote around a canvas, organic bag.

Political Style: Sarah VS. Michelle

No matter who your favorite pics are for the presidency, the women in the political limelight are definitely making some strong fashion statements.

Sarah Palin is constantly being referenced as the modern-day Caribu Barbie. Which, clearly is intended as an insult, but is it really so terrible? Honestly, we still think of Barbie as one of the most stylish females around. She has an unbelievable figure, and somehow everything looks irresistible on her.

So, haute or not, if you want to achieve Governor Palin’s look, here are a few pointers:

1. CLEAN IT UP

You will never ever see Sarah Palin with an untucked shirt, wrinkly clothing, or even one hair out of place. She always has a smile on her face and looks almost impossibly put together. A smart skirt with a belt that accentuates the waist would be a fabulous choice for the governor or your Fashion Fantasy Game wardrobe.

2. KEEP IT SIMPLE

Palin’s ensembles rarely integrate prints. Her signature style is unfussy, and her outfits are not overworked. The picture above is from the Micheal Kors collection at New York Fashion Week, and it portrays the correct way to use color blocking and volume. This dress is classic but still modern for online or real life dressing.

Now, if you favor Michelle Obama’s look, then it’s time to amp things up a little. Although she is far from edgy, she takes more fashion risks then Palin. Here are a few pointers to help you achieve Michelle’s signature style:

1. PUTTIN’ ON THE PRINTS

The Trina Turk ‘Rory’ dress integrates an energetic print with a stylish silhouette. The result is chic, and it is definitely something that plays to Michelle’s strengths. Best of all, breaking up a strong print with a solid color elongates the body and would look fabulous on your favorite Fashion Fantasy gal or in reality.

2. PAINT THE TOWN RED

There has been a lot of finger wagging and comparing Michelle’s looks to that of former first lady Nancy Reagan. Both ladies love to sport that classic red suit, only Michelle has given new twists to the old classic. We love this Thuy suit from New York Fashion Week that shows a bold color with provocative hardware. We just think this look would be fantastic on Michelle or in your wardrobe.

Get Haute Style on a Budget!

Every gal who wants to look gorgeous on a budget knows that the transition from runway to reality can often be a difficult one. Wait, did we say difficult? We meant expensive. In these horrible economic times, some of those price tags are downright painful. Well, it just seems that that there should be a foxy-fix for fashionistas on a budget. Translation: you live in the real world, and you would like some extra money for running to the movies to see dreamy hunk Zac Efron in High School Musical 3. And, trust us, he is worth every penny!

We’ve been weighing our options, and the GO International Collection courtesy of Target is exactly what should be in your closet right know. Scottish born design guru Jonathan Saunders made his runway debut in London in 2003, so he definitely brings a worldly sensibility to his pieces. We are mad for this ponte jacket in ebony which creates a particularly slim silhouette. It toughens up any denim ensemble, but it is still delicate enough for your skirting options. This resilient outerwear literally does double duty, and it is incredibly chic.

We are also seriously crushing on the black fringed pumps from Mossimo. This label has made a huge impact as a lifestyle brand, and there is a very good reason for the company’s success. Mossimo sticks to the basics, and the designers understand how to dress a female in iconic looks that make an impression. We still can’t believe that this foot candy is so easily available at reasonable pricing. And as our imagination runs away, couldn’t you just imagine wearing these glam gams to the premiere of HSM 3. OMG - Zac would melt for sure!

And speaking of necessary accessories… check out this clutch from Anya Hindmarch. We love this, because her bags ALWAYS sell out. Hindmarch is a superstar of the haute couture world, and just the mere notion of owning one of her ungettable bags for under $20… well, we are weak in the knees. Our fashion emotions are on overload for these must-have shapes!
